How to Design Your Law Enforcement Challenge Coins
Start with what the coin needs to represent. Is it for everyday department use, a retirement, officer recognition, an academy graduation, or a memorial? Once you know the purpose, it is much easier to decide what belongs on the coin.
Next, make a short list of the details you want to include. That might be a department badge, unit name, badge number, motto, K9, vehicle, state outline, local landmark, officer name, or years of service. Memorial coins may also include an EOW date or a short message.
Put the most important element on the front—usually the badge, seal, or unit logo—and use the back for names, dates, numbers, mottos, or supporting details. Try not to fit everything onto one side. A cleaner layout usually makes the finished coin easier to read and gives the main artwork more impact.
You do not need production-ready artwork before you contact us. Send us a badge image, shoulder patch, old coin, K9 photo, sketch, or whatever reference you have. We can clean up the artwork, adjust small lettering, simplify details that will not reproduce well in metal, and help organize the front and back.
Some artwork also works better in 3D. Badges, K9s, portraits, vehicles, and other detailed elements can be given more depth, while cleaner logos and color-focused designs often work well in 2D. We can help you decide which approach makes sense for your artwork.

Once the design is ready, we will send you an artwork proof to review. You can check the wording, colors, placement, and small details before anything goes into production.
Choose the Right Coin Style
Once the design is worked out, the next step is choosing how you want the coin to look and feel. The best option usually comes down to whether your artwork relies more on color, fine detail, or depth.
2D enamel works well for department badges, unit logos, lettering, and designs with solid colors. If your artwork includes a portrait, K9, vehicle, or a badge with more depth, 3D relief can bring out those raised details more clearly.
For retirement, memorial, or formal recognition coins, an antique finish or no-color design can give the coin a more traditional look. If the artwork includes gradients, photo-like details, or very small elements, a printed coin may be the better choice.

What Size Should Your Coin Be?
The right size depends on how much detail you want on the coin.
A 1.75-inch coin works well for a badge, department name, and a small amount of text. If you need more room for names, dates, mottos, or artwork on both sides, 2 inches is a better fit.
For portraits, K9s, vehicles, detailed badges, or deeper 3D relief, 2.25 inches or larger gives the artwork more space and keeps the design from feeling crowded.

Can you make a coin from our existing badge or department logo?
Yes. Send us your badge, department logo, shoulder patch, old coin, or other reference artwork. We can prepare it for production and send you an artwork proof to review before anything is made.
Can you make retirement or memorial coins?
Absolutely. Retirement coins often include the officer’s name, badge number, years of service, and department information. Memorial coins can include an EOW date, memorial wording, or other details that are important to the department or family.
Can I get a quote without finished artwork?
Yes. A logo, photo, sketch, or even a rough idea is enough to get started. Send us what you have along with the quantity you’re considering, and we can help from there. You can also check our custom challenge coin pricing for a general idea of cost.
Can I customize both sides of the coin?
Yes. The front and back can have completely different artwork, lettering, or relief. If your project only needs one custom side, we can do that too, and it will usually cost less.
Will every coin in a bulk order look the same?
Yes. Your order is produced from the final approved artwork and specifications, including size, plating, colors, and other custom details. This works well for department orders, academy classes, special units, and events.
Can I reorder the same coin later?
Yes. If the design and specifications stay the same, we can use your previous project details for the reorder. If you need to change a name, date, or wording, we’ll update the artwork before production.
Can I make changes before production?
Yes. We’ll send you an artwork proof first. You can review the wording, colors, placement, and other details before approving the coin for production.
Is there a minimum order for custom coins?
We don’t have a minimum order. For most custom coin projects, though, we recommend starting at around 50 coins. Since the mold cost is spread across the order, the cost per coin usually makes more sense at that quantity.
